I came across a troubling discussion on Reddit that made me stop and think about how vulnerable an elderly person's pension can become.

A Reddit user, u/anonymity012, shared a situation involving their grandmother's pension. According to the post, their paternal aunt wanted 12k out of the grandmother's 15k pension, while the aunt and uncle were reportedly using the money toward building their own house.

That raises a very important question:

An elderly person's pension should primarily help provide their food, medication, healthcare, housing, comfort and dignity.

Helping an elderly person manage their money is not the same as taking advantage of it. If a caregiver or family member is trusted to handle someone's finances, there should be honesty, transparency and accountability.

And protecting their pension isn't only about preventing family members from taking it. It also means helping seniors recognize scams, unnecessary spending and financial exploitation, while still respecting their independence and right to make decisions about their own money.
